The philosophy of HPE extends far beyond children simply playing games. It is a vital learning area that supports the development of the whole child — physically, socially, emotionally, and mentally. Through engaging and purposeful experiences, students develop fundamental movement skills, confidence, resilience, teamwork, and an understanding of how to lead healthy and active lives.

A core focus of HPE is helping students understand the value of movement and wellbeing. While learning physical skills such as throwing, catching, balancing, and running is important, students also learn why physical activity matters and how it contributes to lifelong health. HPE provides opportunities for self-expression through dance and movement, personal achievement through sport and challenge, and meaningful social interaction through collaborative activities and games. Students are encouraged to develop positive habits surrounding nutrition, personal hygiene, safety, mental wellbeing, and healthy decision-making, empowering them to take responsibility for their own health.

HPE also plays a significant role in the development of social and emotional skills. Through participation in team activities, games, and cooperative learning experiences, students learn sportsmanship, ethical behaviour, communication, resilience, leadership, and respect for others. They develop an understanding of rules, fairness, and inclusion, and recognise how these values transfer beyond the sporting environment into everyday life and the wider community.

At BSS, HPE lessons are designed to be inclusive, enjoyable, and developmentally progressive. We aim to create positive learning experiences that build confidence, encourage active participation, and foster a lifelong appreciation for health, movement, and personal wellbeing. Through a strong emphasis on personal growth, sportsmanship, and respectful relationships, students are supported to become healthy, active, and capable members of their community.

loping motor skills is the obvious goal of PE. Yet there are so many other important goals as well. One of them is learning the value of exercise and personal health. It's one thing to throw a ball but if a student doesn't understand the value of it, they may not see the purpose of it. Thus, students need to be taught or shown what their physical activity can bring them, such as self-expression through dance, accolades playing sport and social interaction with others. Learning to take care of oneself is essential; flossing and brushing teeth, personal hygiene, and eating healthily for example, are important skills to learn about and be encouraged to do. Developing deep knowledge about how to optimise oneself is indispensable.

Another important goal of PE is the development of social skills. Skills that are taught through PE include teamwork, ethical behaviour, cooperation, etiquette, and positivity (how to remain positive even when something is not going your way). Social skills also include the identification and understanding of rules and their value. This valuable skill is transferable to others areas of life; following rules in our community to keep ourselves and others safe for example.

At BSS, PE lessons are enjoyable and fun yet developmentally progressive with an emphasis on sportsmanship and personal development.
